Well, you could always walk after her, dude...I'm just saying...
In the wake of the Beatles, the field for lushly orchestrated, smart love songs cracked wide open. One of the best numbers to emerge from that field was this one from New York outfit the Left Banke. With it's luxurious strings and tinkling glockenspiel the sound of this record pretty much defines the term 'baroque pop.' And the 'pop' end of the equation is satisfied (and then some) by the exquisitely written chorus, which Michael Brown sings in a voice so passionately resigned that you can just about see him kicking pebbles as he watches the mythical willowy dream girl of the title leave.
I've heard this song covered in styles ranging from Motown soul to metal power ballad and it's always been at least listenable. For such a delicate tune, it's sure built to last.
