121. Beatles "Happiness Is A Warm Gun"
At this point, it goes without saying that the impact of the Beatles, not only on rock and roll, but on just about every facet of culture, is incalculable. By 1968, so was the distance they had traveled through the culture they were helping to create. Also, by that point, each of the Fab Four was moving in very different artistic directions. While his one time partner Paul McCartney was investing his effort in ever more intricate and baroque pop, John Lennon was moving towards gritty and mysterious hard rock.
This song was supposedly inspired by a headline in a firearms magazine Lennon had found lying around an office. Opening with sinuous guitar and hazy surrealist imagery, the song went through a rumbling bridge before culminating in 50's style harmonization of the title with girl-group backing, making the ultimate effect wonderfully (and hilariously) pyschotic. The lovable moptops were long way off.
