Listen to the AM radio....
274. Grass Roots "Sooner Or Later"
In the 1960's lots of people tuned in, turned on, dropped out, joined communes, braided their armpits and all that shit. And a lot of people didn't. And they had fun, too, with some great music in the background blaring from their car radios.
The Grass Roots, among others, provided some of the best driving around radio music of their time, singles like "Live For Today' and 'Midnight Confesions.' Released in 1971, 'Sooner Or Later' was the Roots last hit. With it's breathless Four Seasons-by-way-of-Tommy James & The Shondells harmonies, Brill Building-style hooksmithing, bouncy hi-hat rhythm, horn section, organ accents and lyric celebrating the inevitability of love in the age of 'Love The One You're With,' they must've sounded damned anachronistic. And gloriously so. To this day, 'Sooner Or Later' is as sweetly refreshing as the first sip of cold beer on a hot summer night. Drink up.
