Feel the sand between your toes...
199. War "Summer"
LA funk outfit War had been playing around the city for a while when they got a session gig backing up football star Deacon Jones, who decided he wanted to be a rock star. Jones never showed up, so they wound up backing Animals vocalist Eric Burdon on his solo debut "Spill The Wine." Their stellar performance on that hit earned them a recording contract of their own and they occupied a huge place in the popular consciousness for a few years.
More than any of their funk contemporaries, War was comfortable mixing jazz and Latin influences into it's sound to create some of the most sinuous, biting funk of their time. On this track, however, they take a different approach. With it's swaying percussion, gently rolling piano, and gorgeously airy chorus, this record evokes sunny days off like no other. If I listen to this tune long enough, I believe I'd get a tan.
