A hymn to one of my favorite deadly sins...
201. Fastbacks "On The Couch"
My generation has often been called a bunch of slackers. Maybe. But nobody's ever responed to that charge with a better 'Yeah, right. So what?' than Seattle pop-punk legends the Fastbacks do here. How big a bunch a slackers are they? They didn't even bother writing their own song, but lifted this from hescher-punk masters the Supersuckers.
I love me some 'suckers, but this cover beats their version. The opening couplet 'Remote control is in my hand again/I can change the channel but I can't change what I am' sets the tone for this excellent 'fuck you,' to the Cult Of Ambition. Kim Warnick and Lulu Gargiulio's ever-so-slightly off kilter harmonies create the perfect vocal sound and Kurt Bloch is one of the masters of taking a melodic guitar line and drenching it in just the right amount of crunchy distortion. I'd write more about it but, you know..there's a Green Acres rerun on.
